Herald Leader: Grayson Signing Up Influential Republicans

FRANKFORT—Some Republican heavy hitters have signed on to help Secretary of State Trey Grayson raise cash for a possible U.S. Senate bid.

Grayson, a Republican from Richwood in Boone County, filed papers May 6 to form an exploratory committee to run for the seat held by U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning, a fellow Republican and mentor who encouraged Grayson to explore getting into the race.

On Thursday, Grayson released on his blog a list of people who have agreed to serve on his finance committee. Grayson, in a written statement, said the finance committee will help him “raise funds and earn additional support” around Kentucky.

In all, more than 130 people have agreed to help Grayson, a two-term secretary of state. Notable names on the list include Mira Ball of Ball Homes; Terry Forcht of Forcht Bank; Paul Chellgren, former CEO of Ashland Inc.; and Matt Thornton of Thornton Oil. More than a half dozen members of the Republican Party of Kentucky’s central committee have also signed on to help Grayson.

Scott Lasley, an associate professor of political science at Western Kentucky University, said the list of names is a signal to others who may be contemplating a run.

Other possible contenders for the Republican nomination include former U.S. Ambassador to Latvia Cathy Bailey of Louisville, Bowling Green ophthalmologist Rand Paul and state Senate President David Williams of Burkesville.

“It’s a show of strength,” Lasley said. “It’s to show that they are active and engaged.”

Brinkman said the committee will raise funds to help Grayson travel the state to asses his chances of winning the race if Bunning opts out.

“This is strictly an exploratory committee,” Brinkman said. “Secretary Grayson has made it clear that as long as Senator Bunning is in the race, he is not going to run.”
